Chapter 7: Probability

statements such as “Maybe, I can make it across,” “I should make it across,”

etc.

Section Review

7-3 Random Experiments, Sample Space and Events

Before we discuss the concept of probability, we need to introduce some

terms that we will encounter later in this chapter. We will explain the

concept of probability through these terminologies.

Random Experiment

When we randomly select an item from a production line, as mentioned

earlier, we do not know the outcome. Let us refer to this process of selecting

the item as an

experiment

. We will define such an experiment as a random

or probability experiment since we do not know the outcome in advance.

Definition: Random Experiment

A random experiment is an experiment in which the outcome on each

trial is unknown and distinct.

Examples of random experiments are everywhere around us. For instance,

the rolling of a regular six-sided die, the selection of numbers by a lottery

machine, which slot or compartment will the ball end up on a roulette wheel,

etc.
