Chapter 8: Discrete Probability Distributions

355

SUMMARY

This chapter covered the concept of a random variable. In particular, it

covered the attributes of discrete random variables. The concept of a long

term average or the expected value as well as the variance and standard

deviation for a discrete random variable were discussed. Special discrete

random variables which were covered included the Bernoulli, binomial,

Poisson, geometric, and the hypergeometric. The probability distributions

for these special random variables were examined and several examples

were applied to their distributions. In addition, the various workbooks

associated with these distributions were integrated throughout the chapter,

where necessary, to provide solutions for the appropriate examples.
