teaching methods for a given course. In such an experiment, the researcher

would be interested in the final averages for each student in the course for

the different methods of teaching. Here we refer to the students as the

Individuals or objects on which the experiment is performed are called

experimental units.

The final averages in the above discussion will be the values for the

response variable

Definition: Response Variable

A response variable in an experiment is a characteristic of an experimental

unit on which information is to be obtained.

Note:

The response variable may be qualitative, such as whether or not you

pass a course, or quantitative, such as your final overall percentage for the

course.

The experimental variables which we can control or manipulate in ANOVA

are called the independent variables or

factors

.

Definition: Factor

Experimental variables which can be controlled or manipulated are called

the independent variables or factors.

Values of a factor are called the

treatments

or

levels

of the factor.
