Chapter 12: Hypothesis Tests – Large Samples

Notes:

must contain the condition of equality and must be written with the

symbol = or

or

.

When a statistical test is actually performed, we will assume that the

parameter equals a specific value.

Next we will define what is meant by an alternative hypothesis.

Definition: Alternative Hypothesis (

H

)

The alternative hypothesis states that there is a precise difference between a

parameter (or parameters) and a specified value.

Notation:

The alternative hypothesis is denoted by

.

Notes:

is the negation of

.

is the statement that must be true if

is false.

must be written with the symbol ≠, >, or <.

After the hypotheses are stated, the next step is to design the study to test the

null hypothesis and to select an appropriate statistical test.

Note that during

a hypothesis test, the hypothesis that is assumed to be true is the null

hypothesis.

Definition: Statistical Test

A statistical test uses the data collected from the study to make a decision

about the null hypothesis.

This decision in the statistical test will be to reject or not to reject the null

hypothesis.
