13-3 Small Sample Confidence Interval for a Single
Population Mean
Here we will present theory that will enable us to determine, based on some
specified conditions
, whether the true value of a population mean will lie
within an interval of values with a specified confidence.
Specified Conditions
: Samples of size
< 30 will be obtained from a normal
population with unknown standard deviation.
First, we will consider estimating a single population mean based on those
specified conditions.
Figure 13-5
shows the design of the situation at hand.
We will be sampling from a normal population with an unknown mean
and standard deviation
for a particular quantitative variable. We will let
this population mean be denoted by
. A sample of size
will be obtained
and the sample mean
̅
and the sample standard deviation
s
will be
computed.
