Definition: Categorical or Qualitative Frequency Distribution

A categorical or qualitative frequency distribution is a frequency distribution

which represents data that can be placed into naturally occurring categories,

such as ethnicity, college classification, political affiliation, gender etc.

Following is an example which deals with a categorical or quantitative

frequency distribution.

Example 1-1:

The grade distribution for a statistics class is given below.

Summarize the data using a frequency distribution.

Solution:

We will represent the grades as the different classes and the

number of occurrences for each grade as frequencies. The frequency table

(distribution) in

Table 1-1

summarizes the data.
