Chapter 1: Introduction and Graphical Displays

The cumulative frequency for a given class reflects the total number of data

values up to and including the class when the data set is arranged in

ascending order of magnitude.

Definition: Cumulative Frequency

The cumulative frequency for any class is obtained by summing the

frequencies for all classes at or below the given class when the classes in the

table are arranged in ascending order of magnitude.

The cumulative relative frequency for a given class reflects the total

proportion of data values up to and including the class when the data set is

arranged in ascending order of magnitude.

Definition: Cumulative Relative Frequency

The cumulative relative frequency for any class is obtained by summing the

relative frequencies for all classes at or below the given class when the

classes in the table are arranged in ascending order of magnitude.

Note:

The definitions given for the cumulative frequency and cumulative

relative frequency assume that the values (or classes) are arranged in

ascending order from top to bottom in the table when the data is numeric.

The frequency distribution in

Table 1-4

uses the data in

and

also displays the cumulative frequencies and the cumulative relative

frequencies.
