In the previous discussions, we described a procedure for finding the

percentile ranking for a given data value. Next we will discuss the inverse

process. That is, if we were now given the percentile ranking of a data

value, what process should we use to find that data value.

Procedure for Finding a Data Value for a General Percentile

Assume that we want to determine what data value falls at some general

percentile

. The following steps will enable you to find a data value for a

given general percentile

for a data set.

Step 1:

Order the data set from the minimum value to the maximum value.

Step 2:

Compute the position number

of the percentile. To compute the

position number, use the following formula.
