Figure 7-13

shows a common portion for both events. However, sometimes

there is not such a common portion between events. In such cases we are

dealing with events which are classified as

mutually exclusive

events.

Mutually Exclusive Events

Sometimes events may have nothing in common. In such cases, we may

deal with the concept known as

mutually exclusive events.

Definition: Mutually Exclusive Events

Two events A and B are said to be mutually exclusive if they have no

elements in common. In other words, if the intersection is empty.

they do not have any common portion.
