1-3 Dot Plots

Another graphical display which we can use to display data is called a

dot

plot

. A dot plot is useful when the data values are discrete and the range of

the values is small.

Definition: Dot Plot

A dot plot is a plot which displays a dot for each value in a data set along a

number line (usually horizontal). If there are multiple occurrences for a

specific value, then the dots will be stacked vertically above that value.

Solution:

Figure 1-14

shows the dot plot for the data set. We can use the

Dot Plot from Raw Data

workbook to create the graph. The graph was

edited to look the way it does in the figure. Observe that since there are

multiple occurrences of specific observations, the dots are stacked vertically.

The number of dots represents the frequency count for a specific value. For

instance, the value of 3 occurred 6 times since there are 6 dots stacked above

the value of 3.
