Definition: Histogram

A histogram is a graphical display of a frequency or relative frequency

distribution that uses classes and vertical (horizontal) bars (rectangles) of

various heights to represent the frequencies.

Following are a couple of notes with regards to the histogram.

Note:

Histograms are useful when the data values are quantitative.

A histogram gives an estimate of the shape of the distribution of the

population from which the sample was obtained.

Example 1-7:

Display the data in

Example 1-3

with a histogram using

seven classes.

Solution:

We can use the

Histogram from Raw Data

workbook to create

the frequency histogram. A histogram with eight classes for the data is

shown in

Figure 1-17

.
